I was delighted to stumble across Patrick Bromley’s F This Movie weblog and podcast and find an impressive number of 24-hour movie marathon ideas.
Patrick recently held his first full 24-hour movie marathon for his 40th birthday, but also creates hypothetical 24-hour movie marathon schedules just for fun. My favorite was his “Before They Were Famous” 24-hour movie marathon – featuring early work by Scarlet Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Sylvester Stallone, and many others.
Take a look at this index of his 24-hour movie marathon ideas below. Support his work by checking out his website and podcast, won’t you?
24-Hour Movie Marathon Ideas from “F This Movie”
Genre Marathons
- End of the World Movies – Because don’t we all fantasize about starting civilization over after a fiery nuclear holocaust? (answer: no – not me).
- Stephen King Movies – Stephen King is a genre, right?
- Creature Features – Movie monsters! Some giant, some not. All scary.
- Horror Movies – Featuring movies available on the horror streaming service Shudder.com (because of course there is a horror movie streaming service)
- Robot Movies – We all need a little more RoboCop and Terminator in our lives.
- Time Travel Movies – Go beyond Marty McFly with … The Three Stooges Meet Hercules? (and others)
- Dog Movies – Everyone loves heartwarming dog movies, but I think this movie marathon tends more towards the “twisted dog movie” (I’m looking your way Cujo)
- High School / College Movies – Formal schooling takes up about a quarter of our lives. Bring it all back with these movies.
movie marathons featuring an actor
- Tom Hanks Movies – Everyone loves Tom Hanks, in part because of the ridiculously long list of excellent movies he made. This movie marathon is shooting fish in a barrel.
- Jean-Claude Van Damme Movies – John Claude Van Damme does seem to have one of the longest and most underappreciated movie careers among the action stars.
- Kurt Russell Movies – He has done more than Escape from New York you know. Like, Escape from L.A.
- “Before They Were Famous” Movies – A great collection featuring early work by Scarlet Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Sylvester Stallone, and many others.
Movie Marathons Featuring a Place
- Movies based in Los Angeles – I think Hollywood is a little biased on this one – lots of movies are set in L.A. I guess we’ll just settle and say these are the best movies set in L.A.
- Movies based in New York – Big things happen in New York, as any New Yorker will tell you…without asking. Take a peek at the best movies set in New York.
- Movies based in Chicago – Chicago, the city less full of itself than L.A. and New York. Check out the movie set here.
Movies From a Particular Year
- Movies from 1984 -Why 1984? Oh, because Sixteen Candles and A Nightmare on Elm Street, that’s why.
- Movies from 1987 – Why 1987? Because…The Running Man? Er, Innerspace? Hm. I’m not sure all 1980s nostalgia works out for the best.
Other Movie Marathon Themes
- Movies About Movies – While I’m a little tired of Hollywood movies depicting how great Hollywood is, its impossible not to love Ed Wood.
- Movies in Alphabetical Order – Because why not do a movie marathon that plays out like a radio phone call prank?
- Movies Set in Cold Weather – Ok – we’re really reaching for a theme here, but it is a fact that many movies are set in cold weather. Yup.
